My name is Sarah Hassan. I’m writing today to ask for your support for a project that is very near and dear to my heart. I started teaching at Briarmeadow in 2002. Briarmeadow was founded in 1997 by a group of educators who wanted to provide a student first education. My mother, Brenda Herd, was one of the school’s founders. Brenda was passionate about allowing children to explore the world around them. She understood the importance of purposeful play, and its power in developing strong social/emotional skills. I got into teaching after watching her for years pour her heart into education.
During the 2010-2011 school year, Brenda started walking with a limp and her speech started to slur. Meanwhile, she did her best to remain dedicated to her kindergarten classroom. By May 2011, she had received a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Given that there is no cure for the fatal disease, she was forced to retire in the middle of a teaching loop. She loved her last kindergarten class, and she was devastated she could not continue her loop with them. That group of students is now the 8th grade class at Briarmeadow.
Over the course of my time at Briarmeadow I have wanted to provide our students the opportunity to have more choice in seating during their lunchtime. When my mom lost her battle with ALS in December 2017, that thought became stronger. I wanted a way to honor her last group of students and dreamed of her last class being the first class to have a new picnic area during lunch. Not only will the space be used during lunch, but it will also make a great area for class parties, social events, and other school festivities. The cost of this new seating area is $8,000. I hope you will consider making a donation to purchase the tables and benches to create this special outdoor seating area. All donors will be recognized on a plaque honoring their generosity.
